The trouble is that the map is built from information that has already been filtered, softened, and made survivable on its way up. It is not the territory. The phrase "ground truth" is borrowed from reconnaissance: the verified condition on the actual terrain, as distinct from whatever the chart claims. Drawing on more than twenty years and 850-plus leadership assessments, and on a Navy navigator who taught the author that knowing your true position is not the same as trusting the map, this is a book about the discipline of finding out.

Because the standard in any organization isn't what you say in the meeting. It's whatever you are prepared to watch happen and let pass.
