Book Description

You cannot fix what you have not found.
Every leader carries a map of their organization in their head: who's performing, where the problems are, what's actually being said in the rooms they're not in. The trouble is that the map is built from information that has already been filtered, softened, and made survivable on its way up. It is not the territory. And most leadership work fails for exactly this reason. Not because the intervention was wrong, but because it was aimed at a problem that only existed on the map.

The Ground Truth is a field guide for closing that gap. It is organized not around abstract leadership theory but around the symptoms leaders actually notice:

The decisions that keep getting reopened
The misses that get quietly negotiated away
The standard everyone claims to hold, and no one enforces
Across six dimensions, Leadership, Direction, Truth, Accountability, Roles, and Rhythm, it gives you a way to see what is really happening, test whether your reading is accurate, and make the specific move that holds.

The method comes from somewhere older than management. The phrase "ground truth" is borrowed from reconnaissance: the verified condition on the actual terrain, as distinct from whatever the chart claims. Drawing on more than twenty years and 850-plus leadership assessments, and on a Navy navigator who taught the author that knowing your true position is not the same as trusting the map, this is a book about the discipline of finding out.

Because the standard in any organization isn't what you say in the meeting. It's whatever you are prepared to watch happen and let pass.

Author Biography

Harriette Schumacher has spent more than twenty years working with leaders who are navigating by a chart that no longer matches the sea. Her observation is consistent and uncomfortable. Leaders run their organisations on filtered, incomplete information, and they cannot fix what they have not found.

A Master Certified Coach, the highest designation the International Coaching Federation awards, she also holds the ICD.D from the Institute of Corporate Directors. She has administered more than 850 Leadership assessments and coached senior leaders and boards through the gap between the organization they think they run and the one that shows up to work each day.

The Ground Truth: A Field Guide for Leaders distils that work into the six dimensions where leaders lose the thread. Leadership, Direction, Truth, Accountability, Roles, and Rhythm. It includes a diagnostic, the Ground Truth Index, for leaders who would rather find the problem themselves.
